Background - He grew up as an only child in the jungles of Gongaga. Five years before Niblehiem, he joined SOLDIER and made it to First Class. When sent on a mission to Niblehiem, he tried to stop Sephiroth but suffered major damage and was then rehibilitated during five years of experimentation. After escaping with Cloud, he later died on the outskirts of Midgar protecting the boy.

General Background - Very little is known about cannonically regarding Sephiroth's past. He grew up sans parents but did look up to Prof. Gast. During the war with Wutai, with his incridible strength, potent magic, and brilliant thinking, he rose to the top of the SOLDIER ranks and gained the title of "The Great Sephiroth." When sent on a mission to Niblehiem, he went insane/came under the control of an alien/decided to have a bar-be-que. You decide - My theories are in the S&F section.
